What is a wireless access point(Cisco)

A wireless access point is a network device that allows wifi compliant devices to connect to it in order to access specific network resources(internal or external). No cable is required between the client device and the access point. However a cable is required between the access point and the internal network. Your access point would generally connect directly to the router or switch.( if you are setting up and outdoor wireless network you will work with Mesh access points and Root access points). cisco-1832
